HHH Burnie Hash Trash May 25

One of the most appealing aspects of hashing is getting out and seeing parts of out state that you have would not have visited if not for hash. Taking a leaf from the Hashing Old Fart Trekkers (HOFT) group, this week’s hares, Slack Mac and Tals, are offering up something outside of our normal weekly 45-60 minute trail – a half day walk to Winterbrook Falls in the Leven Valley.

We will be meeting at the Penguin Caravan Park at 9:00am on Sunday 27th May for a 9:30am departure for the start at Smiths Plains.

Being a walk rather than a regular hash trail, you should consider dressing appropriately (warm clothing, waterproof jacket, Tyrolean hat, etc) and carrying some extra gear (medicinal alcohol, gorgonzola to attract sniffer dogs and salted crackers for the leeches, etc.).

Tals and Slack Mac have reconnoitred the track and have declared it fit for HOFTS (Hashing Old Farts Trekking Slowly). It might sound a bit daunting, but if we can handle a Bastard-FC trail in the Dial Range then this should be a walk in the forest. Tals’ recce report is shown below.

If you’re up for something a bit more challenging, either follow Slack Mac or join the HOFT group on their 13.8km trek to Black Bluff, meeting at the Quadrant car park in Ulverstone at 7:45am.

After the walk we will adjourn to a pub in Ulverstone for debriefing and re-hydrating. No hash cash required this week – bring/buy your own everything.

Tals’ recce report…

Have completed recce on Sunday’s trek to Winterbrook Falls.

Time from Penguin to Smiths Plains car park - 1 Hour. Walk time to Falls - 2 Hours, a very gentle walk via Tramway Track (last 20 minutes a bit uphill).

Lookout - stunning and base of falls fabulous. “More beautiful than approaches to Walls of Jerusalem and soooo much easier - Photographers playground.”.

Came out via Maxwells Track - 1 1/2 hours easy downhill. Could be comfortably completed by any BHHH member.

Slacko has deliberately explored the only false trail available and he won’t be doing that again!! You’re safe.

I did it in sand-shoes but I recommend boots if you have them as parts of the track are a bit damp underfoot. An ideal walk to try out a trekking pole if you can get hold of one.

Love, Tals

Not an official Hash event, but all-comers are invited to a cracker of a night at Ringo and Dini’s on 26th May. BYO drinks – soup and rolls provided.

There are now only 19 beds left for the Burnie 900th weekend on 4th-5th August. The cost will be $60, which includes two r*ns with circle, badge, accommodation evening meal and cooked breakfast. Bargain! You can e-mail your booking to this e-mail address, but we do need payment prior to the weekend to make sure that we’re not holding empty rooms.
